wiring a ceiling fan with light 3 black wires and white

We had a feeling there was something botched with the wiring. We even checked from the attic and there's just one cable coming from that side of the switch box. Yeah, there are only 3 wires coming from the ceiling. For outlet boxes or outlet box systems designed to support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb), the required marking shall include the maximum weight to be supported. Outlet boxes or outlet box systems used as the sole support of a ceiling-suspended (paddle) fan shall be listed, shall be marked by their manufacturer as suitable for this purpose, and shall not support ceiling-suspended (paddle) fans that weigh more than 32 kg (70 lb). In these applications, the conductor with white or gray insulation or with three continuous white stripes shall be permanently reidentified to indicate its use by painting or other effective means at its terminations and at each location where the conductor is visible and accessible. NEC 200.7(C) (2) Where a cable assembly contains an insulated conductor for single-pole, 3-way or 4-way switch loops and the conductor with white or gray insulation or a marking of three continuous white stripes is used for the supply to the switch but not as a return conductor from the switch to the switched outlet. The power comes back up on the black wire in the same cable. The white wire connected to the black wires is the power down to the switch. We looked at the wiring behind the switches inside for the patio fan and there are only black and red wires running to them. Most of the other rooms in our house have double switched ceiling fans and they all have the red wire for the light switch. Of course we didn't think to pay attention to how the old one was wired before we took it down:P We tried just connecting the new fan's blue (for light) and black (for fan) wires to the ceiling black wire (and white to white and ground to ground) and nothing seems to work. When we took down the old fan though we realized that there are only white, black and ground wires coming from the ceiling.no red wire for the second switch. Inside the back door we have 2 switches, one controlled the light and the other the fan and all seemed to work just fine. It was obviously not intended for outdoor use and was looking terrible so we decided to replace it with an outdoor rated fan. Our house had a ceiling fan installed outside under the covered patio before we moved in.
